Carnival Ship Cancels Port of Call Due to Sinking Cargo Vessel

carnival cruise ship sinking 2023

Local authorities, including the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, Blue Lagoon, and other nearby vessels all assisted in evacuating guests from the boat and getting them safely ashore. A cruise shore excursion has ended in tragedy in the Bahamas with a sunken boat and a passenger’s death during what was to have been an enjoyable day in the tropical destination’s popular tourist spot, Blue Lagoon Island. The incident happened on the morning of Tuesday, November 14, 2023, and a thorough investigation is sure to follow. The Coast Guard is in charge of the search and rescue operations and cleared Carnival Glory to proceed to Montego Bay as scheduled.

Cruise Tour Boat Sinks in Nassau

Furthermore, a full investigation is likely to determine whether the boat was operating as expected and whether or not there were any safety or navigational violations that may have contributed to the incident. Initial police reports indicated the boat was on a snorkeling excursion, a popular activity at Blue Lagoon Island, but it may also have been a ferry to the island before a beach snorkeling tour. Ultimately, the boat sank completely, though water in the area is only approximately 20 feet (6 meters) deep, and the upper part of the vessel was still visible above the waterline after the water intake stabilized. The missing man’s sister, Destiny Barnett, told NBC News that she and 13 other relatives were also on the cruise. Saturday (though Cox and her partner did go back upstairs briefly to retrieve their life jackets).

Passengers were informed of the worsening weather conditions, and the captain and crew closely monitored the situation. Despite the looming threat, the ship continued its course, hoping to navigate through the storm without incident. The Carnival Sunshine storm incident of 2023 was a harrowing experience for passengers and crew alike. Weather experts had issued warnings about a developing tropical disturbance in the region. The video does not confirm which cruise ship the guest was sailing on, but it is a Carnival Cruise Line vessel.

Encountering the Storm’s Wrath: The Carnival Sunshine’s Ordeal

Carnival Cruise Line’s Fleet Operations Center in Miami had received an emergency alert, and reached out to Carnival Vista as close to the reported location. The ship’s master, Captain Paolo Severini, immediately altered the ship’s course to search for the craft. The bad weather the formed in the Atlantic this weekend gave crew and passengers on board Carnival Sunshine a rough ride Saturday.

As she and her family got out of bed, they stepped into what she estimated was 2 to 4 inches of water. While the incident will be thoroughly investigated, preliminary reports indicate that improper ballasting may have caused the stability loss and listing. The 133,500-gross ton, Vista class Carnival Panorama is currently homeported from Long Beach, offering 6-8 night Mexican Riviera itineraries. It is unknown at this time whether the dock area will be cleared and reopened for that visit, which will depend on overall salvage operations and any environmental contamination. About a half dozen people in the shot are seen swimming towards another boat stopped a short distance from the ferry.

According to the company, 2023 unit-adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) exceeded 2019 levels. Your Scenic Ocean View stateroom aboard Carnival Paradise provides the best view of the sea that lies ahead of the ship, with views unlike any on land. And you'll get more of them, too, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing plenty of looking-glass for gazing at the natural wonders of the sea...

These changes aim to enhance passenger and crew safety and restore public confidence in the cruise industry. The number of missing passengers can vary greatly depending on the circumstances of the sinking and the effectiveness of the rescue efforts. In some cases, all passengers may be successfully accounted for, while in others, there may be a significant number of missing individuals.

The Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident of 2023 left a lasting impact on the passengers who were on board the ill-fated cruise ship. Many passengers have shared their harrowing experiences of the storm, recounting the terrifying moments when the ship was tossed around by powerful waves and buffeted by strong winds. While the ship eventually made it back to port safely, the incident served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the open sea and the importance of robust safety measures. Described by the company as “limited series of special cruises made to amaze,” the sailings feature longer itineraries, usually visiting unusual ports and exotic destinations. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Aqua, the line’s third Prima-class ship that is scheduled to launch in April 2025, will sport several new dining options for her guests along with some reimagined spaces. Starting June 17, 2024, passengers booked on cruises departing after the effective date can use the Princess Cruises app to select the dining style they prefer.

Date and Location of the Incident

These regulatory measures aim to establish a more robust framework for ensuring the safety of passengers and crew members on board cruise ships. By holding cruise lines accountable and implementing necessary changes, regulatory bodies contribute to the overall improvement of safety standards in the industry. It is imperative for cruise lines to regularly assess and update their fleet to meet the latest safety standards. By conducting thorough inspections and implementing necessary upgrades, cruise ships can better withstand storms and minimize potential risks to passengers and crew. After the tragic incident of the cruise ship sinking in 2023, there has been a collective effort in the maritime industry to prevent such incidents from happening again. Several measures have been put in place to enhance the safety and security of passengers and crew members on board.

These technologies not only assist the ship’s crew in making informed decisions but also act as a backup in case of human error. Collaboration between regulators and cruise lines can take the form of regular meetings, sharing of information, and joint initiatives aimed at addressing safety concerns. By working together, they can identify emerging risks and develop proactive measures to mitigate them. Another important aspect of continuous improvement is the analysis of near-miss incidents and accidents. By examining the root causes and underlying factors, cruise lines can identify trends and patterns that may indicate systemic issues.

It seems to suggest that the guest drank the spring water inside the bottle and then, in an attempt to fool the cruise line into thinking she did not drink it — and won’t have to pay for it — refills the bottle. A video showing a Carnival Cruise Line guest tampering with a bottle of water in her cabin is making waves on social media, and some comments suggest she ought to be banned from cruising, or even prosecuted. It’s easy to stay on top of the big cruise headlines of the week with Cruise Hive, a leading source for cruise news and features.

Cox said the cruise line did not initially offer her a refund or other compensation, despite her belongings getting wet, including large suitcases the crew had stored ahead of disembarkation. She contacted Carnival when she got home and said she didn’t hear back until Wednesday morning, when a guest services representative asked to set up a call. The ship is currently sailing a 6-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary, having departed Port Canaveral, Florida on Sunday, December 10.

The cruise line will designate separate dining room areas for each of the three options aboard every ship in the fleet, besides Coral Princess and Island Princess. On those ships, reservable and anytime-dining will be combined into one dining room area, due to space constraints. Carnival, for example, locked in a record $6.4 billion in customer deposits in the final quarter of 2023, up 31% since the fourth quarter of 2019. It is likely that many of the customers who have made deposits will be new-to-cruise customers. And while customers can cancel, most of the deposits the cruise line has collected will likely turn into full payment.

The ship can welcome 4,008 guests onboard at double occupancy, or as many as 5,146 travelers when fully booked with all berths filled. Also onboard are approximately 1,450 international crew members to ensure excellent service. Guests onboard have reported that the ship is estimated to arrive at approximately noon and will remain until 7 p.m., and will then return to the same port for another visit Thursday morning, not leaving until 2 p.m. A damaged and possibly sinking cargo vessel has closed a popular Mexican port of call, causing an itinerary change for one Carnival ship.

Christmas on the Rhine 2024 Itinerary Amsterdam to Basel Viking®

viking rhine cruise

A Viking River cruise seemed like the perfect offering for a group of eight people spanning three generations. This post is a review of my time on the Viking Hermod as it sailed down the Rhine. A lesser-known stop on the Rhine on this Viking river cruise is Speyer. A former Roman settlement, it's one of Germany's oldest towns and noted for is large Romanesque-style cathedral and rich Jewish heritage with a traditional bathhouse dating back to 1128.

Pre: Belgium at Christmas

Stay current with special offers, news and destination-focused content. Viking offered a short included tour, then we had about an hour or so to explore on our own. There are some other interesting churches a little further inland, or you could check out the many side alleys that branch off of the Maximilianstraße. On my January sailing, I was pleasantly surprised at how little the weather conditions affected my enjoyment of exploring the varied port calls.

Experience France’s multicultural Strasbourg and Germany’s storied Black Forest before disembarking in cultured Basel. These tended to be walking tours that lasted about two hours and introduced guests to the various cities. However, if you’d rather explore one of the stops on your own (or even stay on the ship), you are more than welcome to skip any of the tours. At this point in the cruise, the Rhine starts to become much more scenic. Rüdesheim is a touristy town known for its wineries and historic center, called the Drosselgasse. Viking doesn’t offer an included tour here, so I explored on my own.

If you are flying in from the U.S. on a first time river cruise it is well worth getting Viking to book the air and advise you of the best flight timings. To avoid unnecessary stress from flight delays or cancellations plan to arrive at least one day before your cruise departs. You should also allow plenty of time for airport transfers at the end of your voyage, especially if you're going to be traveling during the morning rush hour. A Rhine River cruise is a wonderful way to experience Europe and a top choice for a first time river cruise.

Zürich Airport is the nearest major international airport to Basel, and the drive is about an hour. There are also frequent trains that run between Switzerland’s largest city and its gateway to the Rhine. Emerald Cruises is a great option for cruisers in their earlier adult decades. The lower-priced offshoot of Australian-owned all-inclusive line Scenic has contemporary ships that tend to attract a slightly younger crowd -- with good reason.

Despite this, the Viking Hermod had a beautifully designed interior. The lounge and front terraces were comfortable places to sit, relax, or sip a drink. The ship’s common spaces never felt cramped, even when all the passengers were gathered together (e.g. during dinnertime). After visiting the cathedral, I walked across the Hohenzollernbrücke, which is one of the most notable “love lock” bridges in Europe. Yes, I know this is a trend that’s swept almost the entire world, but the number of locks on the Hohenzollern Bridge is still a sight to behold.

I really looked forward to coming back on board after each excursion or tour to enjoy whatever was being served that day. The Netherlands is a small country, and Kinderdijk is only about 95 kilometers (59 miles) away from Amsterdam. As such, the Hermod was already passing through Utrecht by bedtime. The landscape here is so pretty, and one of the highlights of this visit was being able to see the inside of a mill.

Post: Oslo & Scenic Train

What’s more, Viking offered specialties from each region we were passing through. I loved the fact that I got to try Swiss, German, French, and Dutch food all onboard! They also have a permanent menu that includes classics like Caesar salad, steak, and burgers, but I ordered most of my meals from their rotating menu. Now that you’ve seen the itinerary for the Rhine Getaway, the second half of this post will include some information about the actual cruising experience on Viking. In all honesty, the Rhine (which turns into the Waal) is less scenic in the Netherlands than it is in Germany.

Proceed along the Rhine, disembarking to tour the 700-year-old Marksburg Castle and its museum. Enjoy an onboard lunch as you marvel at this scenic passage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where castles overlook the river from their hilltop posts. Longtime readers of my blog will know that I don’t shy away from giving my honest opinion when it comes to travel. With that in mind, I’m happy to report that this Viking River Cruise was an outstanding experience! I’ll cherish the memory of going down the Rhine with my extended family for the rest of my life. You can also pre-book one of many “Optional Excursions,” which are tours that you’ll have to pay extra for.

See how the Rhine, Main and Moselle river systems unfold to create a spellbinding display of storybook villages, Dutch windmills, German vineyards and splendid UNESCO Sites. One thing I really loved about this cruise was that there were lots of fun optional activities onboard the ship in the afternoons and evenings. Our family group enjoyed game nights and musical performances, but you could also attend things like a glassblowing demonstration or a Q&A session with the captains of the ship.

I had mixed feelings about this bustling Dutch metropolis, which I’ve written about in a separate blog post. I thought the main sanctuary of the cathedral was stunning, but I actually didn’t really like climbing the church tower. The views from the top were fine but not as stunning as some of the other panoramic views I saw on this cruise (e.g. in Breisach or Strasbourg). More importantly, the climb is essentially one long spiral staircase – with visitors going both directions on it! Frankly, being on a spiral staircase for that long with only the occasional narrow gothic window was disorienting and dizzying.

This also avoided the traditional double-docking situations when you sometimes find your view of the river obscured by another ship that suddenly moors up alongside. In most places, we enjoyed prime position and while Viking owns several docking locations, we weren't even in competition with the usual fleet of Viking ships as most were moored up for the season. Many guests had been keen to travel at this time of year, citing cheaper prices, less crowds and having more time to travel now than during the summer. Aside from Amsterdam, which had the usual crowd of international tourists, it was the same everywhere which gave a fascinating taste of everyday local life. In all the stops on this cruise, we appeared to be the only tourist group -- even in the likes of Cologne and Strasbourg which, especially during the summer months are busy with tourists.

If you have extra time and want to walk around the town, feel free to. But if you don’t have time or want to rest on the ship instead, you probably won’t miss out on too much. Neuf-Brisach is a sleepy little French town that is surrounded on all sides by a visually stunning series of fortified walls. These walls were designed by French architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban to help protect border outposts from invasion. You can’t make out the geometry of the walled city from the ground level, but you can explore the city streets and get some sense of their architecture.

Best Credit Cards of 2024

The lack of foreign transaction fees is useful for those who regularly make purchases outside the US, such as when traveling by Norwegian cruise ship. Many cards that offer this benefit have an annual fee, so that’s a point in favor of the World Mastercard. Rewards cards, in general, including cruise credit cards, typically require good to excellent credit as defined by FICO. A score in the “good” range of 670 to 739 may be sufficient for a basic rewards card, but for the strongest rewards you can expect to need a score of 740 or higher to qualify.

How to maximize your rewards

Sometimes, cards with average stand-alone ratings may still rank highly on a particular list according to how a person looking for a card in that category may value certain card features. Forbes Advisor looked at dozens of offers to find and rank the best cards for cruises. The reality, however, is that most people will be better served by a general travel card. A cruise credit card will not earn you special status with your cruise line, give you a ton of travel perks or get you free cruises quickly. You'll likely get more bang for your buck with a more general travel card. Its two big highlights are no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. The lack of foreign transaction fees is useful for those who frequently make purchases outside the U.S., such as when traveling by Norwegian cruise ship.

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card for Students offers a welcome bonus with a modest spending requirement while earning 1.5 points per dollar on all purchases. The card’s introductory APR makes it possible to pay for your cruise over time without incurring interest. These protections can come in handy if you experience travel difficulties, although you can purchase standalone insurance policies if you don’t have a credit card that offers them. The two big highlights are no annual fees and no foreign transaction fees.

Here are eight destinations that you can cruise to without a passport (and don’t forget to renew your passport so you’ll always be ready to travel). Passport holders from the below listed countries do not require a visa for Vietnam. Passport holders from all other countries require a visa to go ashore in ports in Vietnam. This visa is mandatory and will be charged to the onboard account for all guests on the ship with the exception of the below passport holders. The cost of the visa will not be waived for guests who remain onboard in Vietnamese ports.

Based on Bermuda’s immigration regulations, some passengers may require a visa to visit the country. Effective March 1st, 2014, guests who require a visa for Bermuda may enter Bermuda visa-free as long as they have a valid multiple-entry U.S. visa or U.S. There are four types of Schengen visas; Type C is the one typically needed by passengers, which can be issued by any one of the Schengen states and is valid for all the others. Due to the type of itineraries in Europe, The Schengen Agreement maintains that certain nationalities require a visa to enter the EU zone. However, when minors are traveling with only one adult, Holland America requires all passengers to have a valid passport book.

Non-American travelers planning to board cruises with stops within the United States will want to familiarize themselves with the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). The United States Customs and Border Protection Agency website provides the relevant information. While you might be okay not bringing a passport if your cruise departs and returns to your home country, it can be a good idea in case of an emergency. This is particularly true if your cruise hugs the shorelines of other countries. If you’re ready to stop the stress and uncertainty of knowing whether or not you need a passport to go on a cruise, it’s time to get started. Traditional expedited service can take up to 3 weeks—not including mailing times.

The Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations for U.S. travelers. But before you book a trip, knowing which travel documents are required and whether you need a passport is essential. Because international cruises in Europe and Asia require air travel, these vacations also demand a passport.

(Cuba cruises will be a bit pricier, but still excellent value.) Just be prepared for a party atmosphere to prevail onboard, as shorter itineraries also tend to attract a younger crowd. Cruise lines fall into different price categories, but hardly any qualify as truly budget. It's often better to look for sales on older vessels belonging to the fleets of mainstream cruise lines for competitive rates. Cheap cruises usually range in price from $40 to $100 per night per person.

These can add another $100-$200 per person, depending on your specific trip. First, prices on websites are quoted for the lowest-tier interior cabin. If you choose a higher-end room like a balcony, then that price will be higher. Among the major cruise lines, we find that Carnival and MSC tend to be less expensive on average than what you’ll find elsewhere. So spend a dollar, get a point that can be put toward cash back, your statement, gift cards, travel, and more. Sure you might save a few bucks, but it’s not like one day the price will be 30% less when a new sale hits compared to the day before.

When is the cheapest time to book a cruise?

Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Travel agents, especially those who do a lot of business with a particular cruise line, have a certain amount of pull. Your agent might be able to snag you an upgrade by contacting the cruise line and asking for a favor. You might not know you have been upgraded until you get to the ship, as it will be based on whether or not cabins are available at the last minute. When you book a cruise, you typically choose a cabin in your desired location. With a "guarantee" cabin, you leave it up to the cruise line to assign you accommodations either in the category you booked or a better one.

Mention your special occasion

And savor a burst of flavors throughout culture-rich ports in the Mediterranean, the British Isles, Scandinavia and beyond on an unforgettable cruise through Europe. No matter where in the world you choose to wander, cruises can take you deep into top-rated cruise ports and off-the-beaten-path gems, so you can experience each one like a local. Having searched and bought cruises online for years, we can tell you that we’ve never seen any sort of evidence that this happens. We’ve priced the same cruise over and over, searched in “incognito” windows, different browsers, etc. with no change in price. You can find deals from any cruise line, but there are some that definitely seem to offer cheaper cruises overall.

These online programs are basically silent auctions that only select cruisers (preference is given to loyalty club members) are invited to join. The cruise line sets a minimum bid, and you can go up in price from there. Cruise lines naturally give upgrade preferences to frequent cruisers who are members of their loyalty programs. In fact, you might be a member without even knowing it if your name was added to a cruise line's email and mailing list after your first cruise with the brand.

It makes sense that if a cruise is about to sail with an empty cabin that the cruise line would slash the fare to at least get somebody in the room. If you’re a member, don’t book without checking out Costco first for your trip. Older ships still have plenty to offer and can be an amazing time, but they just aren’t quite on the same level. And since everyone wants to enjoy the latest and greatest, the newer ships are priced accordingly. These days they are nothing short of floating resorts, with Broadway shows, amusement parks, and fine dining added in for good measure. If you have the most flexibility and are sailing from North America, check out cruises in January, February, September and October.

Just about every ship has a casino, and your play is tracked just like if you went to Vegas. Play enough and cruise lines will offer you sharply discounted cruises, sometimes for seemingly pennies on the dollar. This doesn’t mean you can’t find inexpensive cruises outside of these months. During these times there are no major holidays that lead to increased travel and they come after times like the winter holidays and summer school break so everyone is back to school and work. When it comes to affordability, it’s hard to beat what you get with a cruise.

Also, your agency could have access to special group rates, meaning you'll pay a discounted price for that upgraded cabin you desire. Cruises deals on MSC Cruises include free upgrades, discounts, kids sail free offers and reduced deposits. Take advantage of cruise deals on Lindblad Expeditions cruises and discover the world in a new, pure and sustainable way.

It never hurts to remind the staff how excited you are to be celebrating on the ship and ask if there is any chance for an upgrade. Put on a big smile, be super friendly and ask if there is any chance a better cabin is available. If they don't offer you an upgrade for free, you might suggest you are willing to pay a small fee.

These low prices are partly caused by the general lack of travel between Labor Day and Christmas but also are a result of hurricane season in the Atlantic/Caribbean. Holland America tends to have appealing deals; at time of publication, we saw a two-week transatlantic sailing from Rome to Fort Lauderdale for $57 per person, per night -- and on the line's newest ship. Royal Caribbean offers itineraries to 240 destinations in 61 countries on six continents, including Royal Caribbean’s private island destination in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The innovative brand is known for many firsts at sea, including an ice-skating rink, bumper cars, zip-line, rock climbing wall, robotic bartenders and the Flowrider surf simulator.

Your chance of an upgrade might be based on luck, skill or both. The advice from successful bidders is to go up from the minimum, but how much is a personal choice. Some people snag better accommodations for less than $20, some for $100 or more. If you’re a Costco member, then you are sitting on one of the best places to buy a cruise. In some cases, we’ve noticed that the rates when your number is entered can actually come out higher than without it.
